Lab experience in Shanghai Jiao Tong University: Silvia Gamba & Andrea Pandolfi

Our Laboratory Experience in Shanghai

This research internship in SJTU has been an excellent opportunity to experience a very stimolating academic enviroment.

We were warmly welcomed by the Renji hospital community, in particular by "dr. Ma group", a company of about 20 medical PhD students working in professor's Ma lab.

All of them showed an extraordinary devolution to their works, held in a very familiar and friendly environment.

They tutored us arranging jobs and activities according to our skills and allowed us to follow their experiments and progresses.

Every Monday we were invited to the lab meeting, a dedicated time of comparison and updating to all research projects conducted in the lab, and for us a great moment to learn most up-to-date news on liver diseases.

This period gave us also the opportunity to see how medicine is practiced abroad, in a country for some aspects so different from ours. Learning how Chinese medical system works and about a new culture was something that we truly appreciate; it was an unique occasion to have an insight on different types of patient care and to improve our intercultural awareness and communication skills.

Furthermore this internship gave us the possibility to observe closely what it is like to be working in a PhD programme and allowed us the opportunity to ask ourselves if this is what we wuold like to do after graduation.

In conclusion, thanks to this experience we could understand how a career in translational research is and we got a rewarding and unforgettable life experience in China.
